James Pattersons Dedication To Alma

Riverdale, NY (PRWEB) May 10, 2012

Award-winning author and alumnus James Patterson ?69 continues his support and generosity at Manhattan College with the establishment of 16 new James Patterson Scholarships.

The new scholarships will start this fall, and $ 5,000 will be awarded to 16 rising seniors and juniors who exemplify hard work, determination and leadership in the classroom and within the campus community. Eight students from both the junior and senior classes will be selected to receive the James Patterson Scholarships based on merit, need and involvement in activities related to the College?s mission. All recipients of the James Patterson Scholarships will be selected this summer.

?My hope is that our program will help motivate and stimulate potential leaders at the College who will go on to do great things in their communities,? Patterson said. ?Manhattan College will be warmed and illuminated by their glow.?

During the scholarship program?s second year, Patterson will increase the scholarships from 16 to 18, and recognize eight juniors and 10 seniors with awards. Four of the senior scholarships recipients will be awarded $ 7,500 each based on their personal contributions made to the College throughout their junior year, and these will be determined through an essay submission. The remaining 14 recipients will receive $ 5,000.

?The students who will be eligible for this generous assistance are our ‘emerging stars’: they work in student government, organize and lead the Lasallian Outreach Volunteer Experience (L.O.V.E.) service trips, tutor in the local schools, play varsity athletics, or write for the newspaper and the literary magazine, while also excelling in classes,? said Brennan O?Donnell, Ph.D., president of Manhattan College. ?Many of them are also first-generation college students whose families struggle to meet the gap between available financial aid and the full cost of attendance.?

In addition to the new Patterson scholarships, he currently funds the James Patterson Minority Scholarship at Manhattan, which started in 2006 and has supported the education of 25 students. He also has supported the College?s Jasper Open, De La Salle Dinner and Annual Fund.

Patterson has had 19 consecutive No. 1 novels on The New York Times bestseller list, and holds The New York Times and Guinness world records for most hardcover fiction best-selling titles by a single author (76). His books include the top-selling detective series, Alex Cross featuring Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls, and the popular Maximum Ride, Daniel X and Witch & Wizard series.

As an author, Patterson is passionate about books and encouraging people of all ages to read. In fact, he recently launched the website ReadKiddoRead.com as a tool for adults to help them find books for kids to read. He also rewards groups or individuals who use creative and effective ways to spread the joy of reading with the James Patterson Pageturner Awards, and makes regular donations of thousands of books to troops overseas.

In 2010, he received the Children?s Choice Book Council?s Author of the Year award, an honor chosen by more than 15,000 young readers.

?James Patterson?s strong commitment to education is clearly evident in his generous support of Manhattan College and its students,? O?Donnell added.

Stacking the Deck: Secrets of the World’s Master Card Architect

Written by the holder of several Guinness World Records for cardstacking, this is the first complete, fully illustrated guide to the art of building mind-boggling, multilevel structures with ordinary playing cards. In Stacking the Deck, Bryan Berg reveals the secret to successful cardstacking with his simple four-card-cell structure and expanded grid techniques. Using illustrations and step-by-step instructions, he guides readers on to more elaborate — and incredibly strong — creations. He covers a wide range of architectural styles, from classic to whimsical, and various types of structures, including pyramids, shrines, stadiums, churches, an oil derrick, and even the Empire State Building. Since first setting the height record in 1992, Bryan's built awe-inspiring card models of a Japanese shrine, the Iowa State Capitol building, Ebbets Field, and his latest tower, which is more than twenty-five feet tall! This book includes photographs of some of these amazing pieces, illustrating just how appealing and enduring a “house of cards” can be. Stacking the Deck will inspire everyone from youngsters experimenting with their first deck of cards to adults, who can create their own private skyscrapers.Once you've read Stacking the Deck, you'll never look at a deck of cards the same way again.

Carry Me Down

Carry Me Down

Carry Me Down is an engrossing story that at its heart examines an adolescent’s difficulties navigating the world. John Egan is a misfit — a twelve-year-old in the body of a grown man with the voice of a giant — who diligently keeps track of the lies large and small that are told to him. John’s been able to detect lies for as long as he can remember; it’s a source of power but also great consternation for someone so young. With an obsession for the Guinness Book of World Records, a keenly inquisitive mind, and a kind of faith, John remains hopeful despite the unfavorable cards life deals him. John is like a tuning fork, sensitive to the vibrations within himself and the trouble that this creates for him and his family, and when his sanity reaches near collapse, a frightening family catastrophe threatens to destroy them. Carry Me Down is a restrained, emotionally taut, and sometimes oddly funny portrait whose drama drives toward, but narrowly averts, an unthinkable disaster.

Time for Truth: Living Free in a World of Lies, Hype, and Spin

In postmodern society, truth no longer exists in any objective or absolute sense. At best, truth is considered relative. At worst, it’s a matter of human convention. But, as Os Guinness points out in this book, truth is a vital requirement for freedom and a good life. Time for Truth urges readers to seek the truth, speak the truth, and live the truth. Guinness shows that becoming free and truthful people is the deepest secret of integrity and the highest form of taking responsibility for ourselves and our lives. Now in paperback, this engaging book will interest Os Guinness fans, thoughtful readers, and those concerned with moral, political, and cultural issues.

Three Strange Records From The

Three Strange Records From the Guinness Book of Records

The Guinness Book of Records was first published in 1955, due to an argument between the managing director of Guinness (at the time) and another pub patron. They argued over which bird was the fastest game bird in Europe, but couldn’t find references to it anywhere. He then decided to write a book full of records such as these. This was in 1951, and 4 years later, the first edition was published, with 197 pages of records. The editions since have been filled with an incredible number of useful records, but there were also a number of incredibly odd ones over time. Here are x of the strangest!

Most People Brushing Their Teeth in the Same Venue

On 20th September 2003, 10240 students brushed their teeth simultaneously for at least 60 seconds in Shenshen City, China. How this is even in the Guinness Book of Records, I’m unsure. It’s not some amazing feat of engineering, an example of human potential or excellence, it’s a record of getting loads of people to brush their teeth on the street together. It’s not something that requires any great skill, motivation or inspiration, it’s just people performing a daily activity, but together. Its records like this that makes the Guinness Book of Records that little bit less amazing.

Longest TV-Watching Marathon

From the 4th of December to the 6th of December, 3 British men (Nick Tungatt, Adam King and Steven Hayes) all watched TV continually for 47 hours and 16 seconds. Why this is even in the book, I’m not sure. It doesn’t achieve anything great for mankind, it doesn’t show others what we are capable of, I highly doubt it inspires others to copy their achievement. All it does is show 3 men’s (lazy men) ability to sit in front of a box transmitting images for nearly 2 straight days. It’s not exactly some great physical challenge, it’s more of a “don’t die of boredom” challenge.

Blindfold Motorcycle Speed Record

I can’t believe they even have a category for this one. The record is 265.33 km/h (or 164.87mph) and was set on August 2, 2003. Surely the only difference between this activity and normal motorcycle records is that you don’t see the end of the road when you’re blindfolded. Surely the actual accelerating part is the same as normal, so the only difference between the two records is luck (and having the cajones to trust you’re not right beside the wall already).

Its records like these that make me regret buying the Guinness Book of Records sometimes. Sure, it has loads of great records, but it also has these records that detract from the “spirit” of the book (for want of a better word). I love trivia, don’t get me wrong, but not tooth-brushing, TV-watching, blind-cycling trivia.
