This is the USB relay I took a shot of yesterday, in situ and working perfectly on OS X 10.5.8 It is glued inside one of the plastic boxes that Wilf’s dummies come packaged in.

A Y-Cam Black IP Camera. It’s one of the first generation models and it’s getting a bit wobbly in its old age. It keeps dropping off the network and not reconnecting, so I’m using this relay to reboot it every time it fails to respond to a ping.
Incredibly, it’s already done its job. We were burgled this very afternoon, whilst my wife was in the house, and because this relay was keeping the camera online, we have actually have photographs of the scumbag who nicked our stuff. So, whilst on the one hand I’m pissed off at losing £700 worth of (insured) laptop, on the other I’m rather pleased that my nerdery has actually paid off…
Nice one, sorry to hear about this but a big pat on the back – I guess your wife can never complain again about your Nerdery! (if she ever did – I know I get it all the time!
)
Great idea using the ping/reboot. Personally I would have bought a new one but gained no experience in the process. (+ i have no idea how to do it, although I do have a Arduino)
Where abouts do you live? Why not post the twat on your Flickr page for the craic. Maybe he’s a local thug?
